The Hustler (1961) - Fast Eddie, let's play some pool - The ten best quotes

The Hustler (1961) - Fast Eddie, let's play some pool - The ten best quotes

Director: Robert Rossen
Screenplay: Robert Rossen
Starring: Paul Newman; George C. Scott; Jackie Gleason; Piper Laurie

Ah, yes, greek tragedy in a poolroom. You sure got that right.  It's amazing how well Robert Rossen's The Hustler holds up after all these years. Standout performances from all involved: Newman, Scott, Laurie and, of course, Jackie Gleason as the legendary Minnesota Fats. Here are some of the best quotes from a movie laden with great dialogue.

- What some free advice? - Big John
- Big John, do you think this boy is a hustler? Fats
- Do you like to gamble, Eddie? Gamble money on pool games?
- Fast Eddie, let's play some pool. - Minnesota Fats
- I'm gonna beat'im, Mister. I beat'im all night and I'm gonna beat'im all day - Eddie Felson
- I'm the best you've ever seen, Fats. I'm the best there is. And even if you beat me, I'm still the best... - Eddie Felson
- Stick with this kid, he's a loser... - Bert Gordon
- I gotta hunch, Fat Man, I gotta hunch it's me from here on in... - Eddie Felson
- Get on me, Bert, I can't lose - Eddie Felson
- Shoot pool, Fast Eddie - Fats
- Where do you think you're going? YOU OWE ME MONEY! - Bert Gordon
- Fat Man, you shoot a great game of pool. - Eddie Felson

Interesting side note: If you dig this movie (and who doesn't?), check out an episode of The Twilight Zone series called "A Game Of Pool". It has a great Jonathan Winters as "Fats Brown" and Jack Klugman as the pool shark. A classic.

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) - Put That Coffee Down! - 10 Classic Quotes

Best Quotes From Glengarry Glen Ross

Released 1992
Directed by: James Foley
Screenplay by: David Mamet
Starring: Al PacinoJack LemmonAlan ArkinEd HarrisKevin SpaceyAlec Baldwin, Jonathan Pryce, etc.

The ultimate acting tour-de-force. No car chases. No explosions. No chicks in bikinis (no chicks at all, actually), just a couple of guys sitting around talking. I'm the only one at Atlas Glass Repair that actually watches and appreciates this flick, but what a flick it is. Alec Baldwin's ten minute performance is some of the most powerful acting on film. I wonder though if screenwriter David Mamet was paid by the F-bomb (138 times). Glengarry Glen Ross quotes:

* "The rich get richer, that's the law of the land." - Dave Moss
* "You call yourself a salesman, you son of a @#$%?" - Blake
* "Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is your fired." - Blake
* @#$% you! ... That's my name." - Blake
* They're sitting out there waiting to give you their money. Are you gonna take it?... Are you man enough?" - Blake
* "You've got the memory of a @#$%! fly." - Dave Moss
* "Williamson! Williamson! Put me on the board! Put me on the Cadillac board!" - Shelley Levene
* "You see? Because this is how we keep score, Bubbie!" - Ricky Roma
* "Who ever told you you could work with men?" - Ricky Roma
* "You know your business, I know mine. Your business is being an @#$%!!. " - Ricky Roma
* "Will you go to lunch? Will you go to lunch?. Will you go? WILL YOU GO TO LUNCH?!!!!" - Williamson
* "Bruce and Harriet Nyborg??? Do you want to see the memos? THEY'RE NUTS!" - Williamson
* "Because I don't like you..." - Williamson

So much for explosions and car chases. This is one intense flick. I don't know what I admire more, the script, James Foley's direction or the ensemble acting. Jack Lemmon steals the show, though.

Glengarry Glen Ross Trivia: The Alec Baldwin character (Blake) was not in the stage version (also written by David Mamet). The cast included four Academy Award winners and two nominees. David Mamet won a Pulitzer Price in 1984 for writing the stage version.

Casablanca (1942) - Round Up The Usual Suspects - 10 Classic quotes

Directed by: Michael Cutiz

The younger guys at our glass repair company have no appreciation for this all-time mega-classic. But anyone over thirty knows this is one of the greatest films ever produced. It is ranked by the American Film Institute as the #2 greatest film of all time. Enough said.

* "Here's looking at you, Kid..." - Rick
* "We'll always have Paris." - Rick
* "There are certain sections of New York that I wouldn't  advise you to try to invade." - Rick
* "Play it, Sam... Play 'As Time Goes By.'" - Ilsa Lund
* I'm shocked... shocked to find that gambling is going on here." - Captain Renault
* "Go ahead and shoot. You'll be doing me a favor..." - Rick
* "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." - Rick
* "Welcome back to the fight, this time I know our side will win." - Victor Laszlo
* "Round up the usual suspects." Capt. Renault
* "Louie, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship." - Rick

Possibly the best of the best, a cornucopia of classic quotes with the American Film Institute's #5, #20, #28, #32, #43 and #67 greatest of all time. Best of all, the movie still holds up after 75 years - seventy-five big ones!

An interesting side note is the quote "Louie, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship." It is the last line in the movie and occurs as Rick and Capt. Renault walk off into the fog at the airport in the final scene. Originally, it wasn't even in the movie, and was added during post-production after test audiences felt the ending didn't have enough closure. So now you know...

True Romance (1993) A diddled-eye Joe to a damned if I know.. - 10 Great Quotes

True Romance (1993) A diddled-eye Joe to a damned if I know.. - 10 Great Quotes True Romance

Released: 1993
Directed by: Tony Scott
Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino

Wow! What a cast and crew! The late, great Tony Scott directing. A Tarantino script. And cast full of Hollywood heavyweights. No wonder this flick has become a cult classic. I read somewhere that this film is a kindred spirit to David Lynch's Wild At Heart (1990) and I couldn't agree more. The scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper is an all-time classic. Great cameos by Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Penn and Tom Sizemore, too. Heck, it even has a pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini in it. This one is an Atlas Glass Repair Co. fave rave...

Best quotes from True Romance

* "Man, I can't tell you have relieved I was when you took off your dress and you didn't have a @#$%!" - Clarence Worley
* "They got everything here from a diddled-eye-joe to a damned if I know..." - Drexel
* "I'm not scared of you. I just don't like you..." Clarence Worley
* "He must've thought it was white boy day. It ain't white boy day, is it?" - Drexel
* "I'm the Anti-Christ and you've got me in a vendetta kind of mood!" - Vincent Coccotti
* "Sicilians are great liars. The best in the world. I'm a Sicilian. And my old man was the world champion of Sicilian liars." - Vincent Coccotti
* "...Now you tell me... I am lying or not? - Clifford Worley
* I haven't killed anyone...(BANG!) since 1984." - Vincent Coccotti
* "Don't condescend to me, Man. I'll @#$%! kill ya, Man. - Floyd
* "...It's better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it." - Clarence Worley
* "I like you, Clarence... Always have." -  Elvis muse
* "We park our cars in the same garage, my friend." Lee Donowitz
* "There's something I never told you, Lee... I DON'T LIKE COPS!" - Bodyguard
* "...That's the way it goes, but every once in a while, it goes the other way too." - Alabama Worley

Great, great movie. Tony Scott was always one of my favorite action movie directors and Tarantino... well, Tarantino is Tarantino.

Interesting Trivia: The cast includes 3 Oscar winners: Brad Pitt, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken; and four Oscar nominees: Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman,James Gandolfini  and Samuel L. Jackson. Also, multiple Emmy winner, James Gandolfini. The original Tarantino script was 500 pages long and was eventually halved with the one half morphing into the script for Natural Born Killers (1994)... According to Quentin Tarantino, the character Alabama is the same Alabama mentioned by Mr. White in Reservior Dogs (1992)

Against All Odds (1984) "Don't Let This Punk Beat You!" 10 Best Quotes

Against All Odds (1984) "Don't Let This Punk Beat You!" 10 Best Quotes

Against All Odds (1984) Directed by: Taylor Hackford
Screenplay: Eric Hughes
Based on the movie: Out Of The Past (1947)

Welcome to Against All Odds, The Glass Dude's favorite 1980's film noir movie. Set in L.A. and Mexico (against a backdrop of authentic Mayan Ruins), this flick has a great mix of action and drama, and is filmed beautifully by DP Donald E. Thorin. This movie really has it all - a great femme fatale, a likable protagonist, and a perfectly sleazy James Woods as the antagonist. It also has an absolutely great supporting cast with minor parts that makes the whole flick click just right.

It is a must see for anyone who hasn't and is definitely worth re-visiting for those who have. The glass repair shop boys I work with aren't capable of appreciating this gem, so it doesn't get shown much during our many down times, but I still pop it in the old VCR every once in a while to relive some of my wayward youth. Enjoy the best quotes -

* "Jake wants to see you..." - Tommy
* "I don't know what she did to get away from him, what matters is that she got the hell away from him. Why don't you drink to that?" - Mrs. Wyler
* "I can kick myself out, thanks..." - Terry Brogan
* "What is it exactly you don't like, football players, tacos or beer?" - Terry Brogan
* "Do what? Take him to a Mexican Jail with a body and a gun? Are you crazy?" - Jessie
* "It's a little dirty, but not so dirty you won't sleep nights." - Jake Wise
* What about Sully? You remember him, don't you... that guy we killed down there in the jungle?" - Terry Brogan
* You're still trying to kill me, aren't you, Jessie? Well, this time I might just be dead." - Jake Wise
* ... So I have to go into business with some very strange people... Like that @#$#$% next to you." - Ben Caxton
* He got you into this... Now convince me your not an @#$-hole." - Ben Caxton
* "Don't let this punk beat you! It can still work! Sully the trainer, Kirsch the lawyer, and Brogan the Player...  All cheating each other on the Fix!" - Jake Wise
* "Right in my face! Right in @#$%$% face! - Jake Wise

The film also features a really great soundtrack that captures both the essence of L.A. and the subtleties of Mexico. The movie poster has garnered a certain amount of fame as being a classic. Viva the 80's, baby!

Useless Trivia: Jane Wyman (Mrs. Wyler) also starred in the movie this film is based on - 1947's Out Of The Past, a film-noir classic in and of itself; The thrilling Sunset Boulevard street race scene (through traffic, no less) is staged with porsche 911 and a Ferrari 308;

Some Like It Hot (1959) "Well, Nobody's Perfect." 10 Best Quotes

Directed by: Billy Wilder
Screenplay by: Billy Wilder, I.A.L. Diamond

Voted the American Film Institute's #1 Greatest Comedy Of All-Time and the #22 Greatest Movie Of All-Time, and deservedly so. This is one funny movie. It's a late-night staple so the Glass Dude catches it whenever he can. We have a copy of it (VHS) at the glass repair shop we work at but it never quite seems to make it into the rotation - too many young bucks who aren't interested in black & white films (fools).
Note: This list of top ten quotes comes with serious caveat: Many of the best quotes of the movie are part of a witty repartee, and the Glass Dude only deals in one-liners (as does the American Film Institute). Still, there's some great quotes in the movies.

* "You won't breathe nothin' - not even air." - Spats Colombo
* "Will you look at that! Look how she moves! It's like Jell-O on springs". - Jerry
* "Pull in your reel, Mr. Fielding, you're barking up the wrong fish!" - Jerry
* "Some say he'll go far... Some say he's ALREADY GONE TOO FAR!" - Little Bonaparte
* "There was something in that cake that didn't agree with him." - Little Bonaparte
* "I wanna be loved by you, just you, nobody else but you. I wanna be loved by you alo-o-one. Boop boop e doo." - Sugar
* "I heard a very sad story about a girl that went to Bryn Mawr. She squealed on her roommate... and they found her strangled with her own brazier!" - Joe
* "All right, driver, once around the park, slowly, and keep your eyes on the road." - Osgood
* "In da lass fissal year we made a hundred an' twelve million dollars before taxes... only we didn't pay no taxes!" - Little Bonaparte
* "Well, nobody's perfect!" - Osgood (American Film Institute's #28 Greatest Movie Quote

How Tony Curtis didn't get at least an Oscar nomination for his brilliant (and hillarious) portrayal of three separate characters boggles the mind. "Well, nobody's perfect" may just well be the greatest closing line of any type of movie - comedy or not.

Useless Trivia: Marilyn Monroe was pregnant during the filming and was noticably heavy than usual; The character of Spats Colombo was loosely based on Al Capone; The gorgeous hotel scenes were filmed at the Hotel Del Coronado Resort near San Diego, California.

Dumb & Dumber - John Denver is full of @#$%! Ten Best QuotesReleased: 1994
Screenplay by: Peter Farrelly, Bobby Farrelly, Bennett Yellin
Starring: Jim Carrey; Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly

Sometimes, when we've had a bad day and everything's gone wrong - our manufacturer has shipped us all the wrong material; the plate glass window we had to install was grotesquely out of square... Well, you get the idea - sometimes you just need to laugh. When this is the situation The Glass Dude likes to pop a classic comedy in our obsequious VCR and the lads at Atlas Glass Repair watch this comedic gem. So here you are, ten of best quotes from Dumb & Dumber...

* Man, you are one pathetic loser." - Lloyd
* Don't you go dying on me." - Lloyd
* I got robbed by a sweet old lady on a motorized cart. I didn't even see it coming!" - Lloyd
* I'd like to eat her liver with some fava beans and a nice bottle of Chianti." - Lloyd
* I'll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano." - Lloyd
* No, it's a cardigan but thanks for noticing." - Harry
* "Gas man... How the hell did they know that I got gas?" - Joe
* "Kick his ass, Seabass!" - Friend
* "That John Denver's full of @#$%, man." - Lloyd
* "You sold my dead bird to a blind kid?" - Harry
* "Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!" - Harry
* "Mary... I... I desperately want to make love to a schoolboy." - Lloyd
* "Nice set of hooters you got there!" - Harry
* "I want to ask you a question, straight out, flat out, and I want you to give me the honest answer. What do you think the chances are of a guy like you and a girl like me ending up together?" - Lloyd
* "Tell her I'm rich, I'm good looking, and I have, uh, a rapist's wit." - Lloyd

So turn that somber frown upside down and catch this classic comedy. You won't regret it no matter how many times you've seen it before. The Glass Dude guarentees it...

Random Trivia: The chipped tooth that Jim Carrey displays in the movie was real. For the filming he had an old cap removed to add more (or possibly less) character to "Lloyd"; The ABC Mini-series "The Shining" (not the more famous movie) was filmed at the Stanley Hotel which is featured in the film; Written on the bathroom stall wall: "Why are you looking here when the joke is in your hand?"

Trivia Question: What kind of car did Lloyd and Harry purchase with the cash? Answer: A Lamborghini Diablo
