We get a lot of calls in the Old City and Society Hill sections of Philadelphia for what is known in the glass repair business as "hackout" windows. These are simply the older style (60-100+ years) wood frame windows where the glass is held in (glazed) with glazing putty. This type of window is the scourge of all glass companies, as they are disproportionately time and labor intensive. The price to repair them is set accordingly, typically between two-hundred and four-hundred dollars per window depending on how much work has to be performed.
Many times customers are shocked to find out that a six inch by eight inch window glass cost two hundred dollars to repair. Why so much? Well, because of that very fact that they are so very labor intensive and time consuming. That six inch by eight inch window can easily take any where from an hour and a half to two and half hours.
The technology for repairing this type of window has not changed in two hundred years. And it ain't complicated. Basically you have to hammer and chisel out the existing putty (which can be as hard as cement), being extremely careful not to break the window next to it, an easy task by no means as it is usually less then a half inch away from where you are swinging the hammer. Added to this is the fact that the window is usually (preferably) done "in place," making for awkward angles for hammering and chiseling. Once the opening has been entirely chiseled out and thoroughly cleaned, you install the new glass and glazing points, then glaze the window in place with new glazing putty, which, depending on the temperature, can be very difficult to work with.
Putty set windows on upper floors are even more expensive because they typically can not be done "in place" and have to be completely removed. This involves removing the interior wood trim which holds the window sash in place, then disconnecting and securing the counter weights, and finally removing then entire window sash. Then the window can be placed on a work table and repaired. The entire process is then repeated to re-install the window sash.
Because this type of job is so labor intensive, many glass companies in Philadelphia won't even do them. But Atlas Glass company does them and we are here to serve all your residential and commercial glass repair needs.

What type of broken window do you have?
Here at Atlas Glass Company in Philadelphia, we get anywhere from ten to thirty customer phone calls each day. Usually, the first question is "How much will it cost to fix my broken window?"
Years ago, before the advent of smart phones and Google Earth, trying to give someone a realistic estimate over the phone was essentially an exercise in futility, or worse yet, a flat out fool's errand. There were simple too many variables that came into play. However, using today's technolodgy, it is now possible to give someone over the phone a realistic estimate for the cost to repair a specific window.
First of all, and most importantly, take a cell phone picture of the broken glass in question. In fact, take several of them. Be sure to give us a nice wide view, which can give us some perspective of size and design of the window. Too often a customer will send us pictures that are extreme close ups of the broken glass. This, we assure you, is a waste of time and resources, for we are well aware what broken glass looks like. As a point of reference, stand at least ten feet away from the glass. If it is a commercial window, than take a picture of the whole storefront. For residential windows try to get the whole wall in the photograph.
Once you have taken your pictures, you can send them directly to our main phone line - 215-432-8487. You can also email them to us at atlasglassphiladelphia@yahoo.com. It is typically faster and easier if you send them to our phone number.
When we receive the photographs of your broken window(s), we will then ask you some specific question about it. Questions along the line of "It is a single or double pane window? Is it an operating (movable) window or non-operating (fixed)? Is it on the first floor or second? Is the glass clear or tinted?"
Our representatives are professionals and know the right questions to ask. Through this information exchange we can usually give our customers a very realistic estimate to the age old question in the glass company business, "How much will it cost to fix my broken window?"

Anatomy Of Specialty Door Glass Repair.
This particular door glass repair was located on Jackson Street in South Philadelphia. As you can see it is an older door from the sixties or early seventies and not only has a special type of glass, but a unique pattern to it as it has four inverted (reverse radius) corners. Over the years we have done several of these exact type of door glass repairs and they are particularly difficult to do. Most Philadelphia glass companies will not do this type of repair as they are so intensely time consuming (three to four hours is the norm).
First, the frame must be removed and the old glass, which is almost always glued in, has to be extracted. This is actually the hardest and most time consuming part of the job. Care must be taken when backing out the frame so as not to damage it. All of the old broken glass and remaining glue must be scraped or pried off. I've done this personally, and I can tell you it isn't much fun.
Once the frame has been removed, it is used to pattern the new glass. This type of glass cut (inverted curves) is among the hardest to make in the glass repair busines. It is not uncommon to have to cut a new piece of glass three or four times to get it right. Fortunately, for me, I was able to get it right the first time. The glass is then laid in a thin bead of one hundred percent clear silicone and the frame is re-installed. Piece of cake, right? Lol
